Hiroo Isono captures the tangible enchantment of his homeland’s forests. Known for his groundbreaking art direction of videogames in the 1990s, he remains one of Japan’s most treasured artists. In this notecard set of four images, he manifests the exquisite seasonal diversity of Yakushima—a lush island home to Japan’s oldest living trees. These sensational forests also served as inspi- ration for the setting of Hayao Miyazaki’s iconic film Princess Mononoke. Through light, color, and texture, Isono brings to life the landscape where locals say it rains “35 days a month.”
